Lionel Messi Scores Twice in Inter Miami's 2026 Leagues Cup Opener Against Atletico San Luis
Inter Miami kicked off its 2026 Leagues Cup campaign on August 5 against Atletico de San Luis at Nu Stadium. Despite an early goal from the Mexican team, Lionel Messi scored twice to help secure a comeback victory for Miami.
After returning to the starting lineup, Messi responded to an early deficit caused by David Rodriguez's fourth-minute goal. He equalized in the 11th minute with a well-placed shot following a cross from Noah Allen. Later, in the 26th minute, Telasco Segovia scored to give Miami the lead, tapping in another assist from Allen.
Messi continued to shine, scoring his second goal just before halftime after a quick exchange with Yannick Bright. He also assisted Micael on a corner kick in the second half, contributing to Miami's fourth goal. With this performance, Messi became the all-time leading scorer in Leagues Cup history, surpassing Denis Bouanga.
