Lionel Messi Welcomed by Fans in Oviedo Ahead of Award Ceremony
Lionel Messi was warmly welcomed by hundreds of fans in Oviedo on Thursday as he arrived to receive the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.
The Argentine football star traveled from the United States to northern Spain for the ceremony, which is set to occur at the Campoamor Theatre on Friday afternoon. Accompanied by his wife Antonela Roccuzzo and personal assistant Pepe Costa, Messi was greeted by large crowds outside the Hotel de la Reconquista, with supporters gathering early to see the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Messi arrived around 10:15 am local time and was welcomed by Ana Isabel Fernandez, president of the Princess of Asturias Foundation. He received a traditional Asturian welcome featuring bagpipes, and despite the security presence, he took time to greet fans and sign autographs. The award recognizes his significant contributions to football, and during his brief stay in Asturias, Messi is scheduled to engage with students and the academic community.
