LIV Golf Cancels $40 Million Championship Amid Uncertainty
LIV Golf announced the cancellation of its $40 million season-ending team championship, originally set for August 27-30 at The Cardinal at St. John's in Michigan. This decision follows the earlier cancellation of a $30 million event planned for New Orleans in June, raising concerns about the league's financial stability.
Players have expressed uncertainty regarding the payout of the team prizes, as doubts linger about LIV Golf's long-term viability. The league's CEO, Scott O'Neil, stated that funding has been secured for future operations, with plans for a new structure that would make players majority equity holders.
In addition to the championship cancellation, LIV Golf is undergoing significant changes, including a reduction in the number of tournaments from 14 to 10 and adjustments to prize purses. The league is also exploring outside investments after the Saudi Public Investment Fund announced it would withdraw its support by the end of the 2026 season.
