Liverpool Cathedral Celebrates 100 Years of Grand Organ with Family Connections
Liverpool Cathedral is hosting an exhibition to commemorate 100 years of the Grand Organ, which has been integral to its music and worship since its dedication in 1926. The exhibition follows a month of events celebrating the organ's history and will culminate in a centenary recital.
Harry Goss-Custard, who served as the cathedral's organist from 1917 to 1955 and contributed to the organ's design, has a grandson, John Douglas-Goss-Custard, who recalls watching the cathedral's construction from his grandfather's home. Douglas-Goss-Custard, now 84, has fond memories of observing his grandfather perform and has continued the family's musical tradition, albeit through the bagpipes.
The celebrations also honor current organist Prof Ian Tracey, who is retiring after 46 years of service. The exhibition, which includes talks and family activities, will remain open in a reduced format until the end of the month.
