Liverpool Councillor Advocates for Sober Nightlife Following Personal Loss
Chantelle Lunt, a councillor from Knowsley, is calling for Liverpool to adopt more sober nightlife alternatives after experiencing personal loss due to alcoholism. She supports a newly approved five-year strategy by Liverpool City Council aimed at reducing binge drinking and its associated harms.
The plan comes in response to alarming statistics indicating that over 67,000 adults in Liverpool engage in excessive drinking, contributing to significant health issues and costing the city approximately £330 million annually. Lunt emphasized the need for non-alcoholic nightlife options, citing the city's existing coffee rave culture as a viable alternative.
Prof Matt Ashton, Liverpool's director of public health, acknowledged the vibrant hospitality sector but noted that alcohol-related harm continues to pose a serious public health challenge, affecting many families and communities across the city.
