Local Anger Over Holiday Home Restrictions in Brynteg
Residents of Brynteg are voicing their anger over restrictions that prevent homes in the Parc Delfryn estate from being sold to local buyers, as they can only be designated as holiday homes. Since their completion in 2023, 14 out of 16 houses have remained unsold, leading to concerns about the impact on the community.
Planning restrictions imposed before construction began have resulted in a failed challenge to allow local residents to purchase the properties. Anglesey council stated that changing these rules could set a dangerous precedent for holiday homes across the island. Local resident Jane Roberts expressed her disappointment, noting that her family has lived in the area for generations and that the situation has deterred her from seeking other properties.
Estate agents report a lack of interest in the homes, with no viewings in the past 18 months. Local residents, including Phil Morrill and Richard Jones, have criticized the council's decision, arguing that the empty homes could serve as family residences. A planning consultant indicated that the council tax changes for second homes in Wales have negatively affected the holiday home market, leaving the properties idle. The council acknowledged local concerns but emphasized the need for a viability assessment to support any changes to the current restrictions.
