A baseball team from Long Island is experiencing its best season in 63 years, now just two wins away from the Little League World Series. The Port Washington Legends attribute their success to a self-imposed ban on cell phones during game days, which has helped the young players focus better.
The idea for the phone ban originated from the coaches during the New York state championship tournament in late July. They began collecting players' devices five hours before games, allowing the team to concentrate on their performance. Assistant coach Anthony Theoharis noted that this approach has helped the players become more engaged and has contributed to their winning streak.
The Legends recently secured their first New York State title in the team's history and have advanced to the regional round of the Little League World Series, which is being broadcast on ESPN. Players have embraced the phone-free time, bonding over games and conversations, which has fostered teamwork and camaraderie.
As they prepare for upcoming matches in Bristol, Connecticut, the team is focused and confident, with players and parents alike recognizing the positive impact of their distraction-free environment.
