Lord's Cricket Ground Undertakes Major Pitch Renovation
Lord's Cricket Ground has initiated a significant renovation by digging up Pitch Nine, marking the first such action in over 25 years. This decision follows years of complaints regarding the quality of the playing surface, particularly after a Test match against New Zealand in June where the pitch was deemed unsatisfactory by the International Cricket Council.
The renovation involved removing the existing surface and replacing it with a base layer of gravel, followed by fresh soil. This pitch, crucial for high-profile matches, will be out of service until at least 2029, affecting the scheduling of major events including the men's Test against Bangladesh in May 2024.
In response to the ongoing issues, the Marylebone Cricket Club has implemented a seven-point action plan, which includes the introduction of hybrid pitches and drop-in surfaces to enhance pitch quality. The MCC chair has indicated that these changes are part of a comprehensive review aimed at restoring the ground's reputation for hosting quality cricket.
