Los Angeles Clippers Under Federal Investigation Following NBA Fine
The Los Angeles Clippers are currently under federal investigation due to allegations of circumventing the NBA's salary cap to provide compensation to star forward Kawhi Leonard. This investigation is being conducted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York and is reportedly in its initial stages.
This federal inquiry follows a nearly yearlong investigation by the NBA, which was carried out by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. The NBA's findings indicated a pattern of misconduct and multiple significant violations of league rules, leading to a $30 million fine for the Clippers, the loss of five future first-round draft picks, and a one-year suspension for owner Steve Ballmer. Leonard himself was fined $700,000 as part of the league's penalties.
The NBA's investigation revealed that the Clippers facilitated off-court income opportunities for Leonard through various companies associated with the team. Among the scrutinized deals was an endorsement agreement with Daktronics, where funds from a major scoreboard contract for the Intuit Dome were allegedly redirected to Leonard. Other arrangements involving Aspiration Partners, Boingo Wireless, and Lockton Insurance were also examined.
