Luciano Darderi Advances to National Bank Open Quarterfinals
Luciano Darderi from Italy advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open men's tennis tournament after defeating Portugal's Nuno Borges in a three-set match on Saturday in Montreal.
Darderi, seeded 19th, won with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, despite Borges hitting 23 more winners and serving 17 aces compared to Darderi's four. This victory marked Darderi's 30th win of the season, making him the first male player to reach 10 ATP Tour quarterfinals this year.
Following his win, Darderi expressed confidence in his performance, noting his consistency across different surfaces. He was set to face the winner of a match between Arthur Rinderknech and Brandon Nakashima, which was interrupted by thunderstorms. The tournament has seen no Canadian players remaining in the men's singles draw, with over $9 million in prize money at stake.
