Lyndon Faulkner to Review Controversial Plan to Cut Welsh Rugby Region
Lyndon Faulkner, who will officially become the chairman of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) in November, has announced his intention to review a contentious proposal to eliminate one of the professional rugby regions in Wales.
Although he has not yet assumed his role, Faulkner is prioritizing an examination of the WRU's financial situation and the future of the regions, which is currently set to decrease from four to three by 2028. He has responded to speculation that his appointment was conditional on supporting this plan, asserting that he would not accept such terms.
Faulkner expressed surprise at the WRU's recent financial loss of £18 million, stating that he was previously unaware of the extent of the organization's debt. He emphasized the need for a thorough review to identify areas for improvement and to ensure the financial health of Welsh rugby moving forward. Faulkner, who has a background in business and rugby, aims to leverage his experience to address these challenges.
