Maduro and Flores Face New Torture Charges in New York
Nicolas Maduro, the ousted President of Venezuela, and his wife Cilia Flores have been charged with conspiracy to commit torture in a New York court. This new charge adds to the existing drug trafficking allegations against them, following their capture by US military forces in January.
The indictment details accusations that Maduro and Flores tortured political opponents and American citizens to maintain their power in Venezuela. Prosecutors highlighted a specific incident from 2013 where Maduro allegedly ordered the torture of a military officer suspected of plotting a coup.
Flores, who is currently in custody, requested release on health grounds, but a judge denied the motion, citing strong evidence against her and concerns about potential flight risk. Their trial is scheduled for June 1, 2027, and both have pleaded not guilty to the drug charges.
