Maeve Plouffe's Close Call with Car During Tour of Britain
Australian cyclist Maeve Plouffe reported a near-miss with a car while participating in the Tour of Britain this week. The incident occurred as she attempted to catch up to the peloton after suffering a puncture during the opening stage in Cumbria.
Plouffe, a two-time Commonwealth Games medallist, expressed her concerns on social media, urging race organizers to reassess safety protocols. Her warning follows the recent death of British rider Finlay Tarling, who was killed by a non-race vehicle during the Volta a Portugal.
In response to Plouffe's comments, Jonathan Day, events director of British Cycling Ventures, acknowledged the seriousness of her experience and emphasized that rider safety is a top priority. The race continued with Dutch cyclist Lorena Wiebes winning the second stage, which had been temporarily neutralized due to a separate car accident.
