The handshake did not go smoothly on the first try, and after a brief pause, Carlsen made a second attempt, which also went awry, leaving both players laughing.

On the same day, the Fyers American Gambits had a successful start, winning their first match against the PBG Alaskan Knights with a score of 10-4, followed by an even larger victory against the Triveni Continental Kings, finishing 15-4. The Continental Kings, who had previously won the league twice and were runners-up last year, faced a challenging day.

Carlsen, representing the defending champions Alpine APL Pipers, returned to the Global Chess League after missing the previous season. He drew his game against Vachier-Lagrave, but his team managed to secure a narrow victory over the Cheq Mumba Masters, winning 10-8. The Alpine Pipers have undergone significant changes this season, with Anish Giri being the only returning player from last year's championship team.
