Maine Lifeguard Experiences Close Encounter with Great White Shark

A 71-year-old lifeguard in Maine had a frightening encounter with a great white shark while patrolling off Scarborough this past weekend. The incident left him amazed by the creature's strength.

Greg Wilfert was performing his routine duties when a forceful pull on his rescue device dragged him underwater. Initially thinking he had been caught in a boat propeller, he quickly realized it was a shark. In a moment of urgency, he managed to free himself and swam back to the surface, making a swift return to the shore.

After reaching safety, Wilfert immediately helped other swimmers exit the water. The beach was subsequently closed for an hour while drones and Jet Skis searched for the shark, but no further sightings were reported. Local authorities noted that while there have been no additional shark encounters, sightings have occurred at nearby beaches, and they will continue to monitor the situation.
