Makhachev Explains Why Dagestani Fighters Avoid Competing Against Each Other

Islam Makhachev has stated that his Dagestani teammates will not fight each other, even as more of them enter the UFC. The reigning welterweight champion shared his views during a conversation with Hall of Famer Demetrious Johnson, highlighting the camaraderie among fighters like Magomed Zaynukov and Usman Nurmagomedov.

Zaynukov, who debuted in July after earning his contract on Dana White's Contender Series, and Usman, who recently became a free agent, are both rising prospects in the lightweight division. Makhachev emphasized the years of training they have shared under Khabib Nurmagomedov's mentorship, which fosters a brotherly bond that transcends competition.

Makhachev pointed out that their relationships are akin to family, making it impossible for them to face each other in the octagon. He also noted that Zaynukov and Usman often help each other in training camps. Makhachev is set to defend his welterweight title against Ian Garry at UFC 330 on August 15 in Philadelphia.
