Makhachev States Morales Needs Another Fight Before Title Opportunity
Islam Makhachev has indicated that Michael Morales has not yet earned a chance to compete for the welterweight title, even though Morales is prepared to step in as a backup fighter for UFC 330 on August 15.
Makhachev is set to defend his title against Ian Machado Garry in Philadelphia, and Morales would replace either fighter if necessary. However, Makhachev stated that simply being a backup does not qualify Morales for a title shot, suggesting he needs to fight again, potentially against Carlos Prates or Shavkat Rakhmonov, to establish himself as a top contender.
Morales, who holds an undefeated record of 19-0, achieved a significant victory by defeating Sean Brady in the first round at UFC 322. Despite his calls for a title fight, he was overlooked for the matchup against Garry. He has acknowledged difficulties with weight management but is confident in making the welterweight limit if called to fight in Philadelphia. Makhachev's comments imply that Morales will need to secure another fight before being considered for a title opportunity.
