Malawi Advances to Wafcon Final with 3-1 Victory Over Algeria

Malawi's women's football team, the Scorchers, secured a place in the final of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) with a 3-1 victory over Algeria in Rabat. The Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa, were instrumental in this win, scoring all three goals for Malawi.

Despite being the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, Malawi demonstrated their strength by previously defeating notable teams such as Nigeria and Ghana. The match against Algeria was marked by two first-half red cards, one for each team, and a series of missed chances. Tabitha Chawinga opened the scoring with an overhead kick that hit the crossbar and bounced in, followed by Temwa Chawinga's goal just before halftime.

In the second half, Algeria's Ikram Adjabi narrowed the gap, but Tabitha Chawinga's second goal sealed the match. With this victory, Malawi not only advances to the final but also secures a spot in the upcoming FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. The Scorchers will face either Morocco or Cameroon in the final, aiming to become the first debutant to win the tournament.
