Malik Beasley in Plea Deal Negotiations Over Illegal Sports Betting Case
Malik Beasley is currently negotiating a plea deal with the Department of Justice concerning his participation in an illegal sports gambling operation. His lawyer confirmed that discussions are ongoing, with a decision anticipated early next week.
Beasley, a former NBA player, was indicted on June 29 for allegedly manipulating his performance statistics during the 2023-24 season to benefit bettors on prop bets. The indictment states that he collaborated with former NBA player Ed Davis and four other co-conspirators to address significant gambling debts.
Evidence presented by prosecutors includes text messages from co-defendants celebrating Beasley's actions during a game against the Los Angeles Clippers. The scheme unraveled when Beasley exceeded his rebounding prop in a game against the Brooklyn Nets, leading to demands for refunds from his co-defendants. Beasley has previously denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to various charges, including bribery and conspiracy.
