Manchester City Manager Criticizes Focus on VAR Controversy After Derby Win

Enzo Maresca, the manager of Manchester City, has criticized the attention given to the VAR controversy surrounding Erling Haaland's winning goal in the team's recent match against Manchester United. The goal, which secured a 1-0 victory for City, was awarded after a VAR review determined Haaland was onside, despite the team playing with 10 men following Phil Foden's red card.

The referees' body later acknowledged that the VAR decision was incorrect, as Enzo Fernandez had interfered with play while offside. Maresca expressed that it is unfortunate to focus on a single incident rather than the overall performance of his team, which he deemed impressive.

Prior to the match against Norwich City in the Carabao Cup, Maresca noted that similar VAR decisions had previously gone against City, referencing a past incident in a match against United. Howard Webb, chief of the Premier League refereeing body, admitted that the VAR did not adequately assess Fernandez's position during the review.
