Marathon Runners Take to Backyards and Living Rooms Amid Pandemic
As traditional marathon events are canceled worldwide, runners are adapting by completing races in their backyards and living rooms. This trend has emerged as a response to the challenges posed by the pandemic, where open spaces are limited.
Scottish javelin thrower James Campbell celebrated his 32nd birthday by running a marathon in his 20-foot garden, live streaming the event to raise money for the National Health Service. In France, Elisha Nochomovitz finished a marathon on his balcony in 6 hours and 48 minutes, while Pan Shancu in China completed a 50K by running laps around his apartment.
Organizations are also getting involved, with events like the Operation Inspire Virtual Race planned to support the World Health Organization. Additionally, the Personal Peak Quarantine Backyard Ultra challenges participants to complete a 4.167-mile loop every hour, reflecting the resilience and creativity of runners during these times.
