Marcus Mariota Injures MCL, Likely Out for Preseason

Marcus Mariota, the quarterback for the Washington Commanders, sustained an MCL sprain during the team's preseason victory over the Miami Dolphins on Friday. His return timeline remains uncertain, but he is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the preseason.

Mariota played four snaps before exiting the game due to the injury, which occurred during a third-down pass play when he was hit by Dolphins linebacker Tyrel Dodson after completing a 22-yard pass. After attempting one more play, he limped off the field and was examined by athletic trainers before walking to the locker room.

This injury adds to the challenges faced by the Commanders, who have already lost left tackle Laremy Tunsil to a torn triceps and have several other players, including center Nick Allegretti and cornerback Trey Amos, dealing with injuries. Mariota, who joined the Commanders in 2024, has previously served as both a starter and mentor within the team, and if his recovery takes longer than expected, Washington may need to seek additional quarterback support.
