Mariners Acquire Troy Watson from Tigers

The Seattle Mariners have claimed right-handed pitcher Troy Watson off waivers from the Detroit Tigers, filling a vacancy on their 40-man roster. Watson has been assigned to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers.

At 29 years old, Watson was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in 2018 and was traded to the Tigers for cash considerations in 2024. After struggling in his first season with Detroit, he has performed well in the minors over the past two years, posting a 2.81 ERA and 4.21 FIP over 170 innings primarily at Double and Triple-A.

Watson was added to the Tigers' 40-man roster in July but remained at Triple-A Toledo. He had a contract clause that allowed him to sign with teams in Japan or Korea unless he was on the 40-man roster. After being designated for assignment to make room for another player, he is now expected to provide starting and long-relief options for the Mariners, with two option years remaining after this season.
