Mariners Acquire Willie MacIver from Blue Jays

The Seattle Mariners have announced the acquisition of catcher Willie MacIver, who was claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and will be assigned to Triple-A Tacoma.

MacIver, 29, was designated for assignment by Toronto earlier this week. He has limited experience in the major leagues, having played 33 games with the Oakland Athletics last season, where he recorded a batting line of .186/.252/.324. However, he has shown promise in the minors, boasting a .286/.376/.470 line over 1,146 plate appearances at the Triple-A level.

With this move, the Mariners add depth to their catching options, as they have been utilizing Cal Raleigh and Mitch Garver at the major league level, with Jhonny Pereda in Triple-A. Following the release of Garver, the Mariners now have three catchers on their roster, allowing them to maintain a backup option in the minors.
