Mariners Add Jhonathan Díaz to Roster
The Seattle Mariners have announced the selection of left-handed pitcher Jhonathan Díaz's contract. This decision comes after fellow lefty Josh Simpson was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma as part of a roster adjustment.
To create space on the 40-man roster, infielder/outfielder Luke Raley was transferred to the 60-day injured list due to season-ending flexor surgery. Díaz, who is 29 years old, joined the Mariners on a minor league deal during the offseason and has been part of the Triple-A Tacoma rotation this season, where he recorded a 6.22 earned run average over 111 1/3 innings.
Díaz's promotion follows a heavy defeat for the Mariners, who lost 22-0 to the Brewers, marking the most significant shutout in the majors since 1887. Simpson contributed to this loss by allowing five earned runs in just two outs. Díaz is expected to provide long relief for the team and has one option remaining, allowing for a potential return to Tacoma if necessary.
