Mariners Reactivate Carlos Vargas from Injured List
The Seattle Mariners have announced the return of reliever Carlos Vargas from the 60-day injured list. To accommodate his return, the team optioned Nick Davila to Triple-A Tacoma and transferred Matt Brash to the 60-day IL.
Vargas had been sidelined for the entire season due to a lat strain sustained during spring training. He completed a brief rehab assignment, where he pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings across four games, striking out six batters and allowing only two hits. His sinker averaged 97.5 mph during his time with Tacoma.
Last season, Vargas maintained a ground-ball rate of 56% over 77 innings, finishing with a 3.97 ERA and 14 holds. His addition is expected to strengthen a Mariners bullpen that has struggled with an 8.55 ERA in August. Meanwhile, the team is preparing for Kade Anderson's MLB debut against the Cubs, as they adjust their rotation due to Bryan Woo's shoulder soreness.
