Mariners Sign Andy Ibáñez to Minor League Contract
The Seattle Mariners have reached an agreement with utility player Andy Ibáñez on a minor league contract, as reported by Francys Romero. Once finalized, Ibáñez is expected to join Triple-A Tacoma.
This marks Ibáñez's third team this season. He began the year with the Oakland Athletics, where he struggled with a .118 batting average over 11 games before being designated for assignment in late April. The New York Mets claimed him off waivers and assigned him to Triple-A, but he spent a significant portion of that time injured. The Mets released him last week.
At 33 years old, Ibáñez has experience as a right-handed hitter, having played several seasons with the Detroit Tigers. He performed well against left-handed pitchers in 2023 and 2024, but his production dropped to league average against them last year. The Mariners have faced challenges this season, particularly against left-handed pitching, with a batting line of .219/.300/.347 against southpaws. While Ibáñez is not a solution for their shortstop issues, he brings valuable experience to other infield positions.
