Mariners Sign Scott Effross to Minor League Contract

The Seattle Mariners have signed reliever Scott Effross to a minor league contract, as announced by the team's Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma. Effross has reported to the affiliate following his release from a minor league deal with the Detroit Tigers.

During his time with the Tigers' top farm team this season, Effross made 27 appearances, posting an earned run average of 4.46 over 36 1/3 innings. Despite being healthy since April 22, his performance included a low strikeout rate of 16% and a league-average ground-ball rate of 42%. He was released by the Tigers last week.

At 32 years old, Effross aims to return to the majors for a fifth season. He previously had a notable rookie year with the Cubs in 2022 before facing injuries, including Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2023 season. The Mariners' bullpen has struggled, ranking 11th in earned run average, and Effross will compete for a spot following the recent injury to Cole Wilcox.
