Mark English Secures Historic Gold for Ireland at European Athletics Championships

Mark English achieved a historic milestone by winning the 800m at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, becoming the first man to earn a gold medal for Ireland in this event.

English surged ahead in the final 100 meters, finishing with a time of 1:45.26, overtaking Croatia's Marino Bloudek, who secured the silver medal. Ben Pattison finished sixth, while his teammate Max Burgin had to withdraw due to an injury sustained during warm-ups.

This victory marks a significant achievement for the 33-year-old, who previously won bronze medals in 2014 and 2022. English's win is also the first medal for Ireland at this year's Championships. Following his race, Rhasidat Adeleke added to Ireland's success by winning silver in the women's 200m, setting a new Irish record in the process.
