Mitchell, who is pursuing a fifth year of eligibility, found that his chances of playing were clearer at Missouri compared to transferring within the SEC to Kentucky. Although a Kentucky judge had temporarily cleared him to play this season, complications arose due to SEC rules regarding intra-conference transfers.

Mitchell, who played last season at Missouri, did not enter the transfer portal earlier as he was not eligible at that time. He had participated in the summer league with the Denver Nuggets after going undrafted in the 2026 NBA Draft. While his eligibility remains uncertain, he could be a significant addition to Missouri's roster, which is already bolstered by new recruits and a strong transfer class.
