Mark Stewart Becomes World Champion in Points Race
Mark Stewart, a cyclist from Scotland, recently secured his first gold medal at the World Track Cycling Championships held in Shanghai, marking a significant milestone in his career at the age of 31.
Previously, Stewart had won two silver medals and a bronze but faced setbacks after being dropped from British Cycling's high performance programme and halting his professional cycling career due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the lockdown, he remained in New Zealand and took on various jobs, including dog walking and teaching, before rejoining British Cycling in preparation for the 2024 Olympics.
Stewart expressed that achieving this title was unexpected, as he had begun to accept that he might never win a world championship. He noted that his recent experiences have provided him with a new perspective and motivation as he looks forward to competing in the upcoming Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
