Mark Walter Sells Lakers, Dodgers' Future Remains Uncertain
Mark Walter has finalized the sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for $12.5 billion, marking the second sale of the team within a year. Walter, who also owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, purchased the Lakers for $10 billion just a year ago.
While speculation arises about the potential sale of the Dodgers, reports indicate that Walter will continue as the controlling owner as the team pursues its third consecutive title this fall. Since acquiring the Dodgers for $2.15 billion in 2012, Walter and Guggenheim Partners have led the team to three World Series championships and significant regular-season achievements.
Shohei Ohtani's future with the Dodgers is closely tied to Walter's ownership. Ohtani's recent contract includes a clause that allows him to opt out if Walter or president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman leave the organization. Ohtani, a four-time MVP, has made significant contributions on the field and has attracted substantial sponsorship revenue to the team.
Walter is currently under federal investigation for alleged improper loan disclosures, which has raised questions about his financial dealings. The investigation involves the FBI and the Securities Exchange Commission and was initiated following a whistleblower complaint.
