Marlins Confirm Club Option for Sandy Alcantara
The Miami Marlins have confirmed that they will exercise their $21 million club option on pitcher Sandy Alcantara for the 2027 season. This decision, announced on Friday, comes after Alcantara's strong performance following his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
In the previous season, Alcantara pitched 214 innings, leading the league with a 3.87 earned run average. Despite a lower-than-average strikeout rate, his walk rate was commendable, and his ground-ball rate was typical. The Marlins have expressed no intention of trading Alcantara, who is viewed as a vital asset to the team.
There is potential for the Marlins to negotiate an extension with Alcantara before the start of the next season, which could result in a contract exceeding nine figures. The current largest contract in the team's history is held by Wei-Yin Chen at $80 million, but a new deal for Alcantara could surpass that amount.
