Marlins Face Challenges as Injuries Impact Playoff Hopes
The Miami Marlins are currently four games behind the final Wild Card spot in the playoff race with three weeks remaining in the season. The team is facing challenges due to injuries, particularly with right-hander Anthony Bender, who has experienced a setback in his recovery.
Bender, who was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 30 due to a stress reaction in his right shin, had shown promise earlier in the season with a 2.62 earned run average over 34 1/3 innings. However, after a rehab appearance on August 18, he reported lingering soreness and has stopped throwing, now awaiting re-evaluation. The absence of Bender has negatively impacted the Marlins' bullpen, which has seen its ERA rise from 3.38 to 5.03 since his injury.
In contrast, Pete Fairbanks is expected to return to the team after a brief stint on the injured list. He recently completed live batting practice and is projected to be reinstated on Wednesday. Fairbanks has struggled this season with a 6.02 ERA but showed improvement before his injury, posting a 1.80 ERA in his last 11 appearances. Additionally, Max Meyer has resumed throwing after being sidelined since July 19 due to a neck strain, although he faces a tight timeline to regain full readiness for the season's end.
