Martín Maldonado Joins Tigers as Quality Control Coach
Martín Maldonado, a former major league catcher, has been appointed as the quality control coach for the Detroit Tigers, according to reports from Chandler Rome and Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic.
This new role reunites Maldonado with Tigers manager A.J. Hinch and former teammate Framber Valdez. Maldonado played under Hinch with the Houston Astros during parts of the 2018 and 2019 seasons and has a history with Valdez, having caught him during significant games, including the Astros' World Series victory in 2022.
Maldonado, who retired last October after a 15-year career, served as a special assistant with the Braves this past season. He takes over the role previously held by Billy Boyer, who was moved to third base coach last July. Maldonado is also set to manage Indios de Mayaguez in the Puerto Rican Winter League this year.
