Maryland Fires Head Coach Mike Locksley After Eight Seasons
The Maryland Terrapins have officially terminated head coach Mike Locksley, as reported on Wednesday. Locksley had been with the team for eight years, overseeing a challenging period that included a recent five-game losing streak, leaving the Terrapins with a record of 2-5 this season.
Maryland's decision follows a 37-30 defeat to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Athletic Director Jim Smith expressed gratitude for Locksley's dedication and impact on the program, noting the positive relationships he built with players and the community. Co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim has been appointed as the interim head coach.
Locksley, who had a combined record of 38-49 during his tenure, previously served as the interim coach in 2015 and held various coaching roles at Maryland and other institutions. Despite some successful seasons, including bowl game appearances, the program struggled in recent years, finishing with losing records in four of Locksley's seven complete seasons.
