Matt Chapman Expected to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery

Matt Chapman, the third baseman for the Giants, is anticipated to have season-ending surgery due to a hernia and a core muscle tear. He is scheduled to consult a specialist on Sunday, with the procedure expected to take place next week.

Chapman has been out since early July, initially diagnosed with an abdominal strain. After five weeks, the diagnosis was updated to include a muscle tear and hernia, which Chapman has reportedly played through for much of the season. His performance this year has been below average, hitting .235 with seven home runs over 352 plate appearances, despite a stronger June.

Defensively, Chapman has excelled, leading third basemen with 16 Defensive Runs Saved. He is under contract for four more years at $25 million annually, but his recent injury complicates potential trade discussions. Meanwhile, Casey Schmitt, who had taken over as the everyday third baseman, is also likely out for the season due to a meniscus tear.
