Matt Chapman to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery for Sports Hernia

Matt Chapman, the third baseman for the San Francisco Giants, is expected to undergo season-ending surgery for a sports hernia after being sidelined for nearly six weeks due to a strained abdominal muscle.

Following an MRI that confirmed a core muscle injury, Chapman will travel to Philadelphia for evaluation by Dr. William Meyers, a specialist in sports hernias. Chapman had been attempting to return to play but experienced ongoing discomfort while running, despite feeling better during batting practice.

This season, Chapman has struggled at the plate, recording a batting average of .235 with seven home runs and a career-low OPS+. With Casey Schmitt also out for the season, the Giants will likely rely on other players to fill the third base position for the remainder of the year.
