Matt Donohue Returns to Premier League After Controversial VAR Decision
Matt Donohue, the VAR official involved in a controversial decision during the Manchester derby, is returning to Premier League officiating. This follows an incident on September 13, where he and assistant Blake Antrobus incorrectly awarded a goal to Erling Haaland of Manchester City against Manchester United.
The goal was allowed despite Enzo Fernandez being offside and interfering with play. Pro Ref acknowledged the mistake and apologized to Manchester United. Donohue has been officiating in the EFL since the incident, while Antrobus resumed his duties as an assistant referee last weekend.
Donohue is scheduled to serve as assistant VAR for the match between Coventry and Fulham on Saturday. Pro Ref's chief refereeing officer noted that Donohue's focus on Haaland led to a failure to assess Fernandez's impact on the play, which should have prompted a review of the decision.
