Matthew Boyd and Carson Kelly Become Free Agents
Matthew Boyd, a left-handed pitcher for the Cubs, and catcher Carson Kelly have officially become free agents, as announced by the MLBPA. Their mutual options were not exercised, with Boyd's option valued at $15 million and Kelly's at $7.5 million.
Boyd will receive a $2 million buyout, while Kelly's buyout amounts to $1.5 million. Both players are now free to seek opportunities with other teams starting early next week, although they may still negotiate potential re-signing with the Cubs.
Boyd, who will turn 36 in February, faced injury challenges during the 2026 season, including a partial meniscus tear that required surgery. Despite these setbacks, he recorded a 3.91 ERA over 126 2/3 innings when healthy. His performance in recent seasons has been inconsistent, but he is expected to attract interest in free agency, likely securing a one-year deal.
