Matthew Hayden Supports Shubman Gill Amid India's WTC Challenges

Matthew Hayden, the former Australian cricketer, has expressed his support for Shubman Gill, the captain of India's Test and ODI teams, as they navigate challenges in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27. Despite India's current fifth-place standing, with four wins and four losses from nine matches, Hayden believes Gill is well-equipped to lead the team through these difficulties.

Speaking ahead of the first Test between Australia and Bangladesh, Hayden acknowledged the need for improvement in India's Test performance, contrasting it with their success in white-ball formats. He emphasized that Gill, described as a capable leader, has a strong team around him, which includes both young and experienced players.

Hayden, who has observed Gill's leadership during the 2026 Indian Premier League, noted the importance of India's role in sustaining Test cricket, especially given the country's influence through the IPL. He pointed out that maintaining a winning percentage above 50% in Test matches is challenging, highlighting the need for India to secure favorable results in the remaining WTC matches to qualify for the final next June.
