Matthew Schaefer's Increased Workload with Islanders Raises Questions
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Matthew Schaefer, a 19-year-old player for the Islanders, has seen his average ice time rise by over 90 seconds per game this season, bringing him to 26:13 per night, ranking him fourth in the league.
Despite concerns from coach Pete DeBoer about managing Schaefer's workload, both the player and the team view the situation differently. Schaefer enjoys playing and feels physically capable, while DeBoer noted that the increase in minutes does not reflect a uniform workload, as Schaefer has been removed from penalty-killing duties this season.
Throughout his early NHL career, Schaefer has not shown signs of fatigue or performance decline, even with heavy usage. Concerns about the long-term impact of his current workload were acknowledged, but Schaefer remains enthusiastic about his role. Meanwhile, the Islanders have made roster adjustments, placing Matias Maccelli and Calum Ritchie on injured reserve and calling up Kashawn Aitcheson and Pierre Engvall for salary cap management.
