Mavericks Not Engaging in Buyout Talks with Klay Thompson

The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly not in discussions regarding a buyout with Klay Thompson, despite speculation about interest from the Miami Heat if he were to be waived. This information comes from Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.

The Mavericks have looked into potential trades for Thompson, but no agreements have been reached. Thompson, who is 36 years old, is under contract for $17.5 million for the 2026/27 season and is set to enter free agency next year.

Thompson, a five-time All-Star, previously contributed to the Golden State Warriors' success, including three championships. However, injuries have impacted his performance, and his statistics have declined since joining the Mavericks, who have missed the playoffs for the past two seasons. Last season, he averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game, marking career lows in several categories.

Despite these challenges, Thompson has maintained durability, playing in 77, 72, and 69 games over the past three seasons. He remains a proficient three-point shooter, hitting 38.3% of his attempts last season, although his two-point shooting has suffered.

With the Mavericks adding younger players to their roster, it remains uncertain whether they will keep Thompson, especially as they currently have 16 players on standard contracts.
