Max Muncy Undergoes Knee Surgery, Aiming for Healthy 2027 Season
The Oakland Athletics have announced that infielder Max Muncy underwent a minor knee debridement surgery to treat cartilage damage in his left knee. In addition to the surgery, he received a platelet-rich plasma injection and is anticipated to be fully prepared for the start of spring training.
Muncy concluded the previous season on the injured list due to this cartilage issue, which required the procedure but is not expected to hinder his offseason preparations. As he approaches a pivotal 2027 season, Muncy has only one minor league option year left and will need to demonstrate his value to the new front office, led by president of baseball operations Taylor Smith.
A first-round draft pick in 2021, Muncy has struggled to establish himself in the major leagues over two seasons. He recorded a batting line of .214/.259/.379 in his rookie year and showed slight improvement in his second season with a .230/.296/.387 line, hitting nine home runs in 284 plate appearances. His performance has been marked by a high strikeout rate and difficulties against secondary pitches. Muncy has also been working to find a stable defensive position, having faced challenges at both second and third base, and was primarily utilized as a designated hitter towards the end of the season.
