Max Papis Steps Down as IndyCar Chief Steward After 11 Years
Max Papis has announced that he will step down as chief steward of IndyCar after the 2026 season, marking the end of his 11-year role in race control.
The 57-year-old Italian, who has a background in Formula 1, IndyCar, and NASCAR, shared his decision through social media. Papis transitioned to officiating after a successful racing career, which included seven Formula 1 starts and three IndyCar victories.
This announcement follows IndyCar's recent confirmation of contract extensions for several Independent Officiating Board members and the continuation of Scot Elkins as Managing Director of Officiating for 2027. Papis expressed gratitude to the racing community for their trust and respect during his tenure.
