This incident marked Sanchez's second defensive error of the game, having previously misplayed another fly ball into a ground-rule double in the first inning. Following the misplay, Scherzer shot a glare at Sanchez as the Rays took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider noted that Sanchez had a challenging day defensively, which impacted the team's performance as they aim for a Wild Card spot. Despite the errors, Scherzer took responsibility for his pitching, acknowledging his own mistakes during the game.
