McLaren's Andrea Stella Addresses Collision Between Norris and Piastri
Andrea Stella, the team principal of McLaren, has expressed concern over a collision between drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri during the Singapore Sprint, which he described as a serious failure in their racing approach. The incident occurred on the final lap when Norris attempted to overtake Piastri, resulting in both cars spinning and Piastri retiring due to significant damage.
The stewards determined that neither driver was primarily at fault, but Stella highlighted the incident's impact on McLaren's position in the Constructors' Championship. Prior to the collision, the team was positioned to score valuable points, but the accident left them with only a single point from Norris, weakening their standing against competitors Ferrari and Red Bull.
Stella noted that years of experience with top drivers had led him to expect unpredictability, yet he was disappointed by the failure to protect the team's interests. Following the incident, both cars were repaired in time for qualifying, where Norris and Piastri secured fifth and seventh places, respectively. Stella indicated that discussions regarding the incident would continue, focusing on preventing future occurrences rather than assigning blame.
