McLaren's Mid-Season Performance Review in F1 2026

After the first half of the 2026 Formula 1 season, McLaren, the reigning world champion, has struggled to maintain its previous success under new regulations. The team has faced difficulties, including a lack of performance from its Mercedes power unit and a late start on aerodynamic development, resulting in a B- grade.

McLaren's challenges were compounded by issues in the early races, where drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris faced mechanical failures that hindered their performance. Currently, McLaren is in third place with 220 points, significantly trailing Mercedes by 159 points.

Despite these setbacks, McLaren has begun to show improvement, particularly after a successful weekend in Japan, where Piastri secured a second-place finish. Recent upgrades, including a redesigned floor and a new front wing, have enhanced competitiveness, allowing Norris to achieve his first grand prix win. Team principal Andrea Stella emphasized the importance of continuing to develop the car to remain competitive in the upcoming races.
