Measles Deaths Reported in Pennsylvania Amid Rising Cases

On August 25, health officials reported that two residents of Pennsylvania have died from measles, marking the first fatalities from the disease in the U.S. for 2026 and the first in the state in 35 years.

This year, measles cases have surged in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirming 2,777 cases as of August 20. The CDC noted that 94% of these cases are linked to outbreaks, with 36 new outbreaks reported in 2026.

Vaccination rates among U.S. kindergartners have declined, dropping from 95.2% in the 2019-2020 school year to 92.7% in 2023-2024, which has contributed to the rise in cases. Health experts emphasize the importance of vaccination to prevent outbreaks and protect vulnerable populations.
