Mercedes Considers Six-Stop Strategy Amid High Tyre Degradation at Madrid GP

During the first practice session at the Madrid Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff indicated that the team's strategy department was contemplating a six-stop race due to unexpected tyre degradation. However, the long pitlane has drawn criticism and may favor a one-stop strategy instead.

The Madrid circuit has surprised drivers with its high grip levels, although the tyre degradation has also been significant. Pirelli's chief engineer noted that the degradation rates were outside their expectations, with drivers experiencing performance drops due to graining and thermal decay.

As the race approaches, teams are adjusting their strategies, with Pirelli initially predicting a two-stop race but later revising it to a one-stop due to the lengthy pitlane. Drivers have expressed concerns about the pitlane's design, which could complicate overtaking and strategic variations during the race.
